Makers and Mentors

Saturday, April 29, Two Makers & Mentors Groups to Meet at Life Community Church

Project Room Open 1:00 – 4:00—Meeting in the kids great room

For anyone who is not interested in cake decorating, there will still be tables set up in the usual room for sewing, crochet, or whatever activity you choose for the day.

Cake Decorating 1:00 – 3:30—Meeting by the kitchen

Please reply no later than Wednesday, April 26 so there will be enough icing prepared.

Cake decorating 101 will cover basic use of pastry bag and tips to make shell and star borders, leaves, write on cakes, and a couple flowers. I will also demonstrate how to ice a cake to a smooth surface and hide the crumbs.

So basically the afternoon will include icing tutorial, practice time with the various decorating tips on wax paper, and then you decorate whatever cake you choose to bring as a “putting it all together” project.

I will make the icing and bring all the cake decorating supplies, so I will need to know how many people are coming. Feel free to invite a friend that isn’t part of our church. Please reply no later than Wednesday, April 26 with the number of people. I would appreciate anyone who can make a donation to help with the cost of ingredients for icing. I will be making buttercream icing for the cakes frosting, royal icing for flowers, and another decorator icing for the rest. We will try to avoid the old Crisco type shortening (that isn’t healthy), but the healthier choices of non-hydrogenated shortening are more expensive.

You will need to bring a 9 x 13” cake OR a small 1 layer cake (8 or 9”) to practice the icing and decorating. If you want a taller cake to practice sides easier, please already have your layers put together with icing or other filling. The cake needs to be turned out on a flat surface, not still in the pan. If this is something you haven’t tried before, see the directions below.

I look forward to teaching this skill to anyone that wants to make their own family birthday and special occasion cakes.

Turning out a baked cake

Do not use non-stick spray on the pan; it may not come out in one piece. Instead grease and flour your pan before putting your batter into it. After it is baked, let cool 5-10 minutes and slide a knife between the edge of pan and cake to loosen. Set a flat plate or pan on top, hold it all together and flip the cake pan over. Gently lift and see if the cake is releasing from the pan. If not, place a cold, damp dishcloth on top of the warm pan to get it to cool and release. You can also jiggle the pan. It should release once is it cool enough and with gravity. If making 2 layers, release the 2nd one onto a wire cooling rack. Let cool completely before putting 2 layers together with filling.
