There is freedom in not always having to get your own way. Jesus has freed us from the need to fight for our rights. Martin Luther once said, “A Christian is a perfectly free lord of all, subject to none. A Christian is a perfectly dutiful servant of all, subject to all.” Jim Elliott’s famous quote also shows the freedom we can have in surrendering our lives to Jesus: “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.” Over the ages, Christians have used the gift of the Discipline of Submission – the ability to lay down the terrible burden of always needing to get our own way.
